Out & About: Visiting Shinola HQ

This past March while on location in Detroit, I had the good fortune of being invited to take a look around one of my favorite brand’s headquarters. Having been following the resurrection of the once ubiquitous brand since 2011, I was eager to see behind the curtain. Was Shinola in fact a company hell bent on restoring faith in American manufacturing or was it simply another attempt to capitalize on the “Americana” movement? My assumption was that no brand based in Detroit would survive if it were the latter and having a look at Shinola’s inner workings confirmed what I had hoped to be true – Shinola is the real deal.

BreakTheIce In Detroit

Back in February I went to Detroit with some friends and shot a series of videos with Coors Light. Noted graffiti artists RISK and SEVER were on as well to add some flavor to our chosen urban zones. While there I got a chance to check out some of the best food Detroit has to offer like Vinsetta Garage and Star Deli as well as take a private tour of Shinola’s factory, more on that soon. Enjoy this video, which I had the pleasure of editing and make sure to pick up a 6’er of Coors Light, if that’s your sort of thing.

Fuckin love 1990’s advertising especially for the ol redneck speed machine the Ford Taurus SHO. Now I would have put this under Vintagevertising but I did make the cutoff ad’s before I was born though some might say 1990 is vintage I’d say not just yet.

Continuing with this week’s classic car theme today we’re taking a look at the Chevy Nova. First off the Nova isn’t it’s own model but an package that was optional. The real name for the model is the Chevrolet Chevy II but the only one really worth buying was the Nova 400 package. Special emblems, instrument package, wheel covers, side moldings, bucket seats, and floor shifter were the benefits to dropping the extra $161. In 1963 the first Nova SS(Super Sport) was released as the top of the line option but it still had just a V6 under the hood. Small block V8 swaps were very common amongst tuners and in 1964 a 283 V8 option was released. My favorite year for the Nova is the 1966 model as shown above. With a redesigned body and the available 5.35Litre 327 V8 you could get 350 horses to rocket the little coupe down the road. The funny thing is that in 1966 you couldn’t get a Nova that said Nova anywhere on the body. It wasn’t until 1967 that Nova Super Sport badging replaced all Chevy II badging on the high end model. So if you’re in the market for one of these bad boys and want to keep it original leave off the Nova badging unless it’s a 67′ plus. The 62-67 Nova is certainly a quirky muscle car and one of the smallest Detroit ever made. What it lacks in size it makes up for in burning heavy Chevelles and under powered Camaro’s(lotta those out there). The Nova would go onto get bigger and more like a Chevelle as the years went on. By 1974 it was close to being the same car a far cry from the little coupe of 66′. Eventually as with all muscle cars from the 60’s it’s name plate would be slapped on a damn ugly four door in the second half of the 70’s and then embarrassingly put on a joint project with Toyota in the 80’s. I really wonder what the hell Detroit automaker’s were thinking from 1975 until…well very recently. With the resurgence of the Challenger, Camaro and Mustang I think it’d be cool to see classics like the Nova, Dodge Coronet, and Fairline re-imagined for today’s market. My friend Matt showed me this last night. He’s from Michigan so it’s extra funny to him but having been to Detroit I find it pretty fucking hilarious too. It’s also sad because he assured me this is not a joke. This is a real rap video made by real inhabitants of the D.
